New Blue Sun André 3000

A certain generation of music listeners may well be familiar with downloading an album only to discover that it sounds nothing like anticipated, the files having been mislabeled as an artist quite different to that contained therein. You could be forgiven for feeling that is what has happened here on ‘New Blue Sun’, an out-of-leftfield first album in nearly twenty years from Outkast rapper André 3000. Rather than a Hip Hop album of creatively outsider Pop, or a return to his Dirty South roots, the vocalist instead has turned in a purely instrumental album of psychedelic ambient soundscapes led by his performance as lead flautist. While the track titles remain idiosyncratic and humorous, the music is carefully layered and wonderfully textured, at times absorbing and others pleasingly washing over the listener. The album we didn’t know we needed and as enjoyable on repeat listen as on its initial surprise.
