Santhosam Priya Ragu

The debut LP from Priya Ragu finds her mixing Dance Pop with R&B on a collection of bold, declarative tracks that brim with confidence. Tracks like ‘Black Goose’, which addresses the murder of George Floyd and police violence, are impactfully political, while ‘Hit The Bucket’ addresses her Tamil heritage on a rap track that melds styles into a burgeoning contemporary Pop style of mixed global cultural influence. Elsewhere ‘Easy’ draws on UK Garage while ‘Adalam Va!’ leans into Grime to the point of a Skepta namecheck. This eclecticism, mixed with the brevity of the tracks, means that all fifteen speeds by yet avoid blurring together. Standouts abound but the slowed pace of R&B burner ‘Uyire’ taps into a late-90s mood that feels hazy, darkened yet emotively dense to make it an album highlight.
