Hit Parade Róisín Murphy

The latest album from Róisín Murphy was six years in the making, predating her last release ‘Róisín Machine’, and written remotely in collaboration with DJ Koze. That connection, passing track ideas and versions back and forth between London and Hamburg, has resulted in an eclectic, vibrant and cohesive collection that bristles with humour and alluring melodies. The collagist spirit is strong in both artists and that is evident here are filters flit on and off vocals, beats unfurl and switch out, abstract electronics punch gaps in tracks and Murphy both sounds like the House Diva we’ve come to know and love over a thirty-year career while also being unrecognisable on tracks like ‘The Universe’. The highlight, perhaps unsurprisingly, is ‘You Knew’, a Deep House cut that plays to the well-established strengths of both Murphy and Koze but nonetheless feels fresh and vital.
