World Music Radio Jon Batiste

The multi-Grammy winner returns with a new set that eschews both his Jazz origins and the soulful sound that has elevated his name to new levels instead taking in a genre-hopping Pop sound brimming with dynamism, star collaborators, and soon-to-be chart-topping choruses. From the pure Pop of ‘Be Who You Are’ to the Jazz blast of Kenny G on ‘Clair de Lune’, the range here is quite extraordinary. On ‘Butterfly’ Batiste briefly returns to basics on a piano-led ballad where his soulful vocals shine as much as his piano work, while ‘Master Power’ hints at an alt-Country rocker, and ‘Uneasy’ slides from a wrought Pop track into a piano and rap duet with Batiste sparring with Lil Wayne before the latter picks up electric guitar and the two close out the track. It’s a surprising highlight to an album that sets Batiste up to vie for a Pop coronation much like Pharrell before him.
