I Told Them Burna Boy

The latest from Burna Boy is a bold declaration of accomplishment from a star reaching new peaks. For those tracking his success from his breakout as a lighting light of Afrobeat to his current position as the progenitor of Afro-fusion, a cross-genre style that borrows from global dance and Hip Hop music while working alongside some of the biggest names of the styles he leans into. On ‘I Told Them’ that means sampling Brandy on ‘Sittin’ On Top of the World’, featuring voice notes from the late superstar fashion designer Virgil Abloh, and separately featuring both RZA and GZA from Wu Tang Clan. Yet it’s the tracks where he’s solo that excel, like on the chilled sax groove of ‘Tested, Approved & Trusted’ where a clipped snare beat provides a steady pulse as Burna Boy croons. Elsewhere, a spare acoustic guitar loops on ‘If I’m Lying’ leaving Burna Boys’ vocals bare and showcasing their ability to carry a track stripped of collaborators and genre-hopping sounds.
