My Back Was a Bridge for You to Cross Anohni and the Johnsons

While ANOHNI’s last album, ‘Hopelessness’, was a leftfield electronic record that dealt with the climate crisis head-on, her latest is a return to a softer, warmer sound. Having reformed her band after a decade, ‘My Back Was a Bridge for You to Cross’ has been produced by Jimmy Hogarth, Producer of Amy Winehouse and Duffy, and featured a mix of Soul, ballads, and organic soft Rock. Built on spacious guitar, bass, and drums that lean heavily towards emotive tones, the album is filled with slow builds like ‘Rest’ which allow ANOHNI’s absorbing vocals to work their magic while delivering an instrumental punch. Elsewhere, ‘It Must Change’ draws on Marvin Gaye while ‘Go Ahead’ draws on overdriven, reverb-heavy guitar on the album's most out-there cut. The highlight, ‘Can’t’ is an ode to a lost loved one that showcases the depth and beauty of ANOHNI’s lyrics and vocals.
