Work Of Art Asake

The second release from the rising Nigerian star, ‘Work of Art’ is packed with enticing Pop melodies as Asake switches from Yoruba to English and back again on his lush auto-tuned vocals. Musically the hollow reverberation of the punchy bass is balanced out with subtle synth lines as Asake pushes an Afrobeats sound that creates space for Amapiano, House and R&B. On ‘Basquiat’ there are strings woven throughout, while ‘Amapiano’ is, unsurprisingly, an ode to Amapiano. Beyond the melodies there’s depth, as Asake brings out his wit with lines like ‘Full branding, no be Fugazi, white Range, black Maserati’. Elsewhere, ‘I Believe’, ‘Sunshine’, and opener ‘Olorun’ make it impossible to pick a highlight. Asake’s start is rising, don’t miss out.
