The Omnichord Real Book Meshell Ndegeocello

Returning with an expansive collection of genre-hopping tracks, Meshell Ndegeocello brings with her a significant cast of top line musicians to craft a dynamic and absorbing soundscape. With such a large supporting cast it’s an impressive feat that the collection is cohesive throughout. Ndegeocello is clearly a talented bandleader, and alongside this her vocals float through the entire album in equal pairing with the intricate instrumental compositions that lean into Jazz but never really occupy the space as influences slide inward and boundaries of genre blur outwards. Filled with beauty and depth, ‘The Omnichord Real Book’ demands a certain level of commitment to take it all in and rewards repeat listens, yet the tracks here all stand alone as immediate and compelling vignettes that reward equally when taken in isolation. Grammy awards are sure to follow.
