My Soft Machine Arlo Parks

The follow up to her Mercury Prize winning debut, ‘My Soft Machine’ finds Arlo Parks relocated to California and channelling a familiar West Coast cool on a collection that expands on the laid back vibes of her debut. This time round Parks’ focus is more intimately personal, focusing on the detail of life while keeping things low-key and smooth. The dreamlike ‘Dog Rose’ finds her admitting “you caught me feeling hyper real” while fuzzed, electric guitar riffs join in, while ‘Puppy’ opens on a classic 90s R&B beat. Elsewhere, ‘Purple Phase’ delivers a melancholy reverb-laden guitar riff on a slice of modern Indie and ‘Impurities’ delivers a Boom Bap beat on a woozy, feel-good celebration of love that stands out as an album highlight.
