Desire, I Want To Turn Into You Caroline Polachek

A Pop album in the loosest sense, the latest from Caroline Polachek twists and warps a variety of disparate genres and sounds, including bagpipes and children’s choir, into a grooving mass of opaque lyrics and earworm choruses. Focusing on love, lust and infatuation, there’s an edge to ‘Desire…’ that ensures every track comes across as sharp-witted and ripe for unexpected shifts. Working with producer Danny L Harle, Polachek takes the hyper pop aesthetic and shaves off some intensity leaving behind a vibrant sound that brims with detail and contrast. ‘Pretty In Possible’ is warm and cocooning, while the follow-up track ‘Bunny Is a Rider’ is crisp and focused. The one collaborative track, ‘Fly To You’, features restrained vocal takes by Grimes and Dido over a Drum and Bass breakbeat. The result is a track, and an album, that is uncannily contemporary while seamlessly harking back to previous eras of Pop.
