Turn The Car Around Gaz Coombes

The most recent solo outing from the singer-songwriter best known for his work with Supergrass is a stop-you-in-your-tracks moment that rivals the headiest days of his time leading one of the 90s most tantalising Indie bands. From the riff on ‘Long Live The Strange’ to the breakdown on ‘Don’t Say It’s Over’, track after track hinges on arresting guitar parts that feel sprightly and improvised, while Coombes’ vocals have the same familiar laid-back chill and emotive swell he has long since established. There’s a band in one room, live feel to ‘Turn The Car Around’ that suggests adds tension and energy throughout while careful overdubs and backing vocals fill out the sound into a rich palette. Comfortable writing immediately gripping tracks with catchy hooks, Coombes excels when he adds depth, expanding on big feelings with subtlety and nuance. At its finest, like on the propulsive, speeding ‘This Love’ Coombes' crafts near perfect Indie Rock and what is sure to be in consideration for one of the tracks of the year.
