Freakout/Release Hot Chip

The latest from Hot Chip, their eighth studio release, finds the whole band contributing to the writing process as they decamped to a London studio for their first group writing sessions. The result is an album that fits comfortably within their wider oeuvre while also pushing for new boundaries, like on the uptempo title track that draws on 80s Synth Pop, Electro, and 90s Big Beat.

The Evil That Men Do’ continues this push towards something new, and stands apart from the rest of the album, as it tackles social and political ills head on. Elsewhere, there’s a melancholy wit to ‘Hard To Be Funky’, while album highlight ‘Time’ is a straight shot of mid-tempo, contemporary club music with crossover appeal.
