Spell 31 Ibeyi

Album number three from sisters Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi-Díaz finds them tapping ancient Egyptian spirituality as they sketch warm connections between themselves, our shared wider community and culture, and their ancestors. While both previous albums were rhythmic and warm, ‘Spell 31’ amplifies those features like on the bass-heavy ‘Made of Gold’ where chattering percussion, rhythmic vocal whoops and sung backing harmonies are joined by a verse by Pa Salieu. Elsewhere, ‘Lavender & Red Roses’, featuring Jorja Smith, balances hand percussion with swelling vocal harmonies and overdubs, while album closer ‘Los Muertos’ finds the sisters joined by the voice of their father from his own track ‘Rezos’ in a song that honours their inspirations and pays homage to their ancestors.
