Old Friends New Friends Nils Frahm

Crafted from over a decade of archives, ‘Old Friends New Friends’ collects together minimalist solo piano recordings of Nils Frahm at his most intimate. Capturing the physical performance replete with piano pedal stomping, tape whirr, heavy breaths and atmospheric sounds, the sounds captured here are more stripped back and laid more bare than ever. While Frahm’s previous works, like ‘Spaces’, have preserved a similar physicality and sense of space, there’s a less composed sense of looseness here. While some tracks feel little more than teasing sketches, others could have been album centrepieces in their own right. At 80 minutes in length, it’s notable that much here will leave the listener wanting more.
