Temporary Highs in the Violet Skies Snoh Aalegra

Album three from former Prince protégé Snoh Aalegra finds her sound expanding through envelope pushing production from Tyler, The Creator and The Neptunes. Drawing on 90s R&B, Snoh Aalegra’s vocals are smooth and effortless with a sweep and richness that has drawn understandable comparisons with Sadé, while Aalegra has credited Whitney Houston as a strong overall influence. ‘Neon Peach’ feat. Tyler, The Creator comes with a ‘Dangerous’-era Michael Jackson vibe but with lessons learned from Trap, Grime and contemporary Pop. Elsewhere, The Neptunes produced ‘In Your Eyes’ is indebted to Kieran Hebden, while opening track ‘Indecisive’ begins with pitch shifted vocals before providing the track closest to mainstream R&B. Both tracks are standouts that highlight the vitality that abounds in ‘Temporary Highs…’.
