Magic Oneohtrix Point Never Oneohtrix Point Never

Experimental electronic music is not a genre that tends to come with a requisite tally of fame. Yet Daniel Lopatin, as Oneohtrix Point Never (OPN), has risen to higher critical and cultural recognition than many of his contemporaries. ‘Magic Oneohtrix Point Never’ has helped propel him to new levels of renown, though no doubt a recent appearance on Saturday Night Live with The Weeknd, who appears here on ‘No Nightmares’, aided this ascendancy. Based on the premise of a radio dial sliding through station after station, we’re treated to a mosaic of genre-influences, textures and styles as spoken word interludes play against fuzz and electronic glitches.

From R&B to Indie Pop, mainstream radio sounds are filtered through a distinct OPN lens. The result is a sound that is both an exaggerated version of Lopatin’s established oeuvre of soft, nostalgia washed electronics but also a distilled and refined version of that sound. Rich with contradictions, contrast, wit and humour, ‘Magic Oneohtrix Point Never’ is the perfect starting point for anyone who hasn’t been following the OPN story so far.
