Source Nubya Garcia

Nubya Garcia’s tenor-sax will be familiar to anyone keeping an ear on the exploding London Jazz scene or who has fallen for recent work like Makaya McCraven’s ‘Universal Beings’. On her debut album, she immediately proves herself a leading light as she treats us to a vibrant, full bodied album of commanding Jazz. Accompanied by an impressive team of musicians, not least of which is Joe Armon-Jones’ piano and keyboard playing, Garcia explores numerous influences not limited to Ska, Cumbia and Afro-Jazz. Retaining exceptional separation throughout, Nubya’s sax weaves in and out of focus taking turns as a complementary foil and as centrepiece. While ‘La Cumbia Me Está Llamando’ provides a rich and absorbing listen alongside some of the few vocals here, the highlight comes in the delicate, looping simplicity of ‘Stand With Each Other’. It’s rhythmic vocal harmony ensuring it is a standout among so many others.
