7 Sault

Balancing bass grooves with smooth vocals, ‘7’ the second album this year from Sault, takes in Jazz, Funk, R&B, Electronica and more. Deep but never dark, solid rhythms support vocals that play with a dichotomy between naive and knowing. On ‘No Bullshit’ the blunt vocal “can’t fuck with me, cause I know the real things are free. Can’t bullshit me.” sits against a carefree, loose rhythm. The highlight, however, is the exceptional ‘Living In America’ that rolls in with a slow groove bass that calls to mind the best of Funk influenced Post Punk. The sweet yet chilling vocals and lyrics capture the fear and hypocrisy of the violent side of American culture. It’s a mesmerising performance that demands to be put on repeat.
