Phone Orphan Laura Veirs

Her thirteenth album, ‘Phone Orphans’ collects together demos Folk singer-songwriter Laura Viers recorded on her phone over the last decade. With almost every track stripped back to just voice and guitar, the demos were mastered but have otherwise retained their intimate origins as one-take live recordings. Telling tales of life and love, the mood varies but never strays from tender and affecting with each track immediate and alive. At their most minimal, as on ‘Swan Dive’, the demo-like origin is clear, while the looped guitar parts of instrumental ‘Magnolia Sphere’ feel far more produced. On these more complete tracks, the knowledge that Viers accomplished them in such a simple manner only strengthens the impressiveness of her craft, though standout ‘Rocks of Time’ is a near-perfect snapshot of a singer-songwriter at their peak.
