The Backstory

British luxury retailer MATCHESFASHION launched a residency during FRIEZE week in Los Angeles. This saw the brand bring the concept of 5 Carlos Place, its retail and broadcasting hub located in the heart of Mayfair, to LA and taking over a mid-century modern home in the Trousdale Estates for a week-long programme of events and luxury shopping experiences.

What We Did

When curating the sound for an event, a key component is creating an atmosphere that reflects the environment. With consumer experience as valuable as the product in today’s market, we carefully considered how the sound impacted the event. At a pop-up, this manifests as complete customer immersion in their surrounding environment.

Unlike our usual work with MATCHESFASHION, we followed a slightly different brief to meet new requirements for the specialised event. The sound needed to be uplifting with a mix of eclectic, female-led electronic indie sounds that we then layered with feel-good classics across disco, reggae, soul and modern indie. The music created an inviting warmth for the store that positively impacted customer experience by keeping the mood high.

We worked alongside Alexander McQueen, Dr Woo and L’Objet + Haas Brothers who also supplied sample playlists for us to build upon. Each playlist therefore had a distinct and brand focused feel.

This success demonstrates the importance of flexibility with your music curation service. We pride ourselves on being able to accommodate businesses and their diverse opportunities through sound.

“The playlists were amazing, so many people commented on them! We really loved the Dr Woo one and the LA residency playlist kept the vibe of the pop-up fun and chilled and truly think that it was a key part of the success for the pop-up overall.”
