With A Hammer Yaeji

The debut from Yaeji, previous long-play release What We Drew was technically a mixtape, finds the New Yorker diversifying her House style into Techno, Ambient, Indie and Jazz.

With a Hammer is an exploration of music as an outlet for rage, sung in English and Korean, and finds Yaeji stretching her boundaries musically and emotionally. The title track fits most closely with her previous output, looping and hypnotising, while the slow-burn Electronica of I’ll Remember For Me, I’ll Remember For You is built on fractured synth chords, horns and a resonant piano bassline. Elsewhere, Done (Let’s Get It) is a wonderful leftfield Pop cut, while 1 Thing To Smash is a stripped bare, ambient Techno cut built on empty space, woozy synthesised flute, and guest vocals from Loraine James. Whether With A Hammer is a debut or a return, it’s clear it finds Yaeji at her most enthrallingly creative.
