Heavy Heavy Young Fathers

Arriving in full stride on their fourth release, Young Fathers up the ante with a collection that brims with infectious enthusiasm and joie de vivre while still retaining the raw passion and nuance of previous releases. Laden with gripping hooks that speak to a new level of self-assuredness, tracks like ‘I Saw’ and ‘Drum’ are built on urgent bass and drums that add further weight to these tracks’ momentum. Elsewhere tracks like ‘Geronimo’ slow things down but retain the same sense of progress, moving forwards towards a brighter future and enjoying the process all the way. The stripped and raw industrial beat behind ‘Sink Or Swim’ belies the joyous warmth of the layered vocals creating a dynamic contrast that is among the band’s very best tracks. As cohesive a release as there’s been this year, ‘Heavy Heavy’ offers dynamism and depth that demands repeat listens.
