SOS SZA

The much anticipated second album from SZA is a twenty three track epic selected from an apparent stockpile of over one hundred tracks crafted over the five years since her breakthrough, ‘CTRL’. Though still a contemporary, forward-looking R&B album at heart, ‘SOS’ showcases a range of influences and styles throughout. While melodic Hip Hop and soulful ballads are the most frequent touchpoints, tracks like ‘F2F’ draw on more diverse sounds, with ‘F2F’ beginning with floating bedroom Indie Pop before descending into Pop Punk choruses. Elsewhere, ‘Nobody Gets Me’ wears the influence of Mazzy Star’s ‘Fade Into You’ openly, though the influence of Natalie Imbruglia’s ‘Torn’ is also in there too. It’s an eclectic mix that manages to throw in so many stylistic angles, including closing on an Ol’ Dirty Bastard sample, while SZA’s imprint remains writ large, still retaining a strong sense of self throughout.
