No Thank You Little Simz

The latest from the Mercury Prize winning Little Simz, a surprise end of year release, finds her fully focused on mental health and the pressures and inequalities of the music industry as she reasserts her focus on being a singular talent, true to herself. Once again teaming up with producer Inflo, the musical backing on ‘No Thank You’ follows the trajectory of his Sault project as choirs and building orchestration dominate. The main thrust of the album though is, unsurprisingly, Little Simz vocals. More laid back and casual in her flow, though losing none of the barbed wit and drive we’re familiar with, Simz hints at the intimate, confessional, chatterbox style of The Streets and nods this way with a Mike Skinner namecheck on ‘Gorilla’. Sounding looser, yet conversely more assured, ‘No Thank You’ feels like a nod and a wink at a brighter future Little Simz has waiting for us.
