Anyhow Leland Whitty

The debut from Leland Whitty, a multi-instrumentalist best known as a member of BADBADNOTGOOD is a cinematic slip of an album running less than half an hour that packs in Jazz, dreamy cinematic scores, and hints at Ambient Electronica. ‘Windows’ slowly builds to a crescendo that briefly hints at exploding into Jazz Rock territory before looping back to string swells and percussion while the propulsive ‘Silver Rain’ wears the influence of Kosmische. Elsewhere, ‘Glass Moon’ weaves double bass and strings into a celestial glow before saxophone joins for a triumphant build towards the end. It’s the perfect precursor to album highlight ‘Awake’, a captivating groove with lush strings and haunting sax that’s over all too soon. Condensed and concise, ‘Anyhow’ is a short, cinematic slice of modern Jazz that demands repeat listens.
