Running in Waves George Riley

Less experimental than her debut mixtape, George Riley’s debut LP is a more focused endeavour that showcases her writing skill and her enticing vocals to full effect. Working with producer Vegyn, ‘Running in Waves’ finds the duo bringing the best out of each other on a suite of R&B filled with atmospheric electronics, laid back percussion and lush strings. Balancing relatively minimalist instrumentals with Riley’s rich vocals results in a varied interplay that ebbs and flows throughout, ensuring each track is magnetic and engaging. The chill of ‘Acceptance’ is balanced by the dreamlike quality of ‘Jealousy’, while ‘Sacrifice’ is light and wistful. At less than twenty-five minutes of run time, ‘Running in Waves’ doesn’t dip for a moment and is as consistent a debut as you’ll hear all year.
