Hold The Girl Rina Sawayama

The sophomore release from Rina Sawayama drops the guitar heaviness from her debut in favour of full on Pop while continuing her bold genre-hopping experimentation. Instead the influences on ‘Hold The Girl’ lean electronic with Two-Step beats and Trance-y Euro Pop mixing with rockier Pop Punk and Power Ballads. It’s an eclectic mix that benefits from Sawayama’s Pop-focused vocals acting as a cohesive thread as rousing, immediate choruses transform each track into latent chart toppers. Recalling some of the biggest names in Pop over the last ten years ‘Catch Me in The Air’ is effortlessly catchy while the title track is a thoughtful remix away from being a club staple. Album highlight ‘Frankenstein’ is a perfect slice of wrought Emo Pop that is one TikTok run away from being a global hit.
