Beginning where her debut left off, ‘Special’ finds Lizzo bringing positivity and empowerment to a dozen tracks that zip by in a mix of Disco, Electro and Rap. Having written almost 200 songs between albums, it’s unsurprising that nearly every track here glistens as though a potential single. Thanks to her dynamic, arresting vocals and skill at capturing perfect lyrical hooks, with just a touch of edge, it’s hard to think of any of the tracks as anything other than anthems. ‘2 Be Loved (Am I Ready)’ soars, while ‘I Love You Bitch’ is a hands-in-the-air Disco ballad, and elsewhere ‘Grrrls’ wittily twists a Beastie Boys sample into a celebratory track of friendship and female independence. Album closer ‘Coldplay’ features a pitch-shifted sample of Chris Martin and Lizzo’s finest vocal take of the album, a true showcase of her prowess.
