Broken Hearts Club Syd

The second solo release from Syd is, as the title suggests, a document of love and loss. While her work as part of the band The Internet has tended towards more buoyant tracks, on ‘Broken Hearts Club’ Syd channels mellow R&B for a more laid back vibe. Her quieting vocals lend an alluring nature to tales of what has been, could have been, and is still to come, while guests such as Kehlani, on the guitar-backed ballad ‘Out Loud’ provide additional warmth. Album highlight, and opener, ‘CYBAH’ features Lucky Daye on a heavily treated verse that acts as a sharp counterpoint to Syd’s whispered main line. Backed by an ‘80s synth riff, sturdy bass and reverb-soaked drums, it’s a warming track that places Syd in an assured place of strength as she asks a future lover “could you break a heart?” that perfectly sets up the rest of the album.
