Sketching out dark vignettes that grapple with struggle and suffering, and at times revel in it, Nilüfer Yanya finds beauty, light and control through arresting melodies and a mastery of pacing that is carefully picked out yet also unrelenting. Built on sturdy rhythms a combination of Shoegaze guitar, electronics, horns and straight up Indie guitar riffs provide texture and interest while never appearing complicated or in contradiction. It’s a diverse palette that in lesser hands may have lurched or become unwound but instead remains compelling from start to finish.
