Electricity Ibibio Sound Machine

The fourth outing from Ibibio Sound Machine wears its influence on its outer sleeve as the title ‘Electricity’ gives away the heavy focus on Electro and Disco vibes herein. Drawing on African musical genres from Highlife to Afrobeat, the sound is rarely steely or cold. Instead producers Hot Chip help find the funkier end of Electro but, in keeping with their own sound, with an added crispness that wasn’t there on previous ISM releases. What continues to be a standout is Eno Williams’ vocals. Weaving together English and South Nigerian Ibibio, Williams renders emotion in a visceral way, from the deft ‘Afo Ken Doko Mien’, through the anthemic ‘Wanna See Your Face’, to the voluminous ‘Protection From Evil’. ‘Electricity’ is another fine display of the wide scope and enticing energy that ISM creates, this time ably assisted by top producers.
