Ants From Up There Black Country, New Road

The much anticipated sophomore release from Black Country, New Road was released alongside the news that vocalist Isaac Wood had left the band. ‘Ants From Up There’ is a showcase for Wood’s disarming wit and detailed lyrical vignettes that are at once wonderfully illustrative yet gloriously tenuous. Lead single ‘Chaos Space Marine’ is dense of verse and musical backing, beginning with a rousing chorus filled with delightfully incongruous fills, before descending into a piano driven verse until percussion and strings join, first subtlety then forcefully. Onwards it rolls while Wood’s drops lyrical nods to tracks still to come. Most impressively, it is merely a single point in an album of equally mesmeric tracks that demand to be soaked in as a whole time and again.
