Dawn FM The Weeknd

The follow up to ‘After Hours’ finds The Weeknd dealing with a prolonged sense of unease. That’s not immediately obvious from the beats here, which draw on synth-heavy Electro Pop and boldly wear the influence of the hit-making ear of producer and co-writer Max Martin. Intercut with radio DJ chatter, provided with aplomb by Jim Carrey, the album is intended to capture a sense of purgatory; a waiting room before the dawn replete with background radio chatter. Heaving with heavyweight guest spots and collaborators, including Daniel Lopatin whose radio-styled ‘Magic Oneohtrix Point Never’ album is an interesting precursor, ‘Dawn FM’ is a complex and substantial release that succeeds in bringing depth, nuance and repeated Pop anthems to the fore.
