Following ‘The Covers Record’ and ‘Jukebox’, this is the third collection of covers from Cat Power. Originally entering the studio intent on recording new material, Chan Marshall encouraged her band to relax into the sessions before finding herself once again sketching out twisted reworks of other people’s songs. Alongside a wistful, almost romantic, take on The Pogues’ ‘A Pair of Brown Eyes’ are a faithful take on The Replacements ‘Here Comes a Regular’ translated to piano, and a rendition of Nick Cave’s ’I Had a Dream, Joe’ that is equal parts Marshall’s as Cave’s. By once again crafting homage’s to others’ work, Chan Marshall showcases her own talent as a composer, writer and performer with a unique suite of tracks as much her own as of the original authors.
