Album number eight from Alicia Keys is a 26 track double album composed of “original” piano and vocal based tracks backed by a flip side of “unlocked” tracks that have been variously reworked by producer Mike Will Made It. Of the originals, the classic, brooding, heavy balladry of ‘Is It Insane’ is a Keys vocal showcase while ‘Daffodils’ is a stripped back but breezy singer-songwriter turn. Once “unlocked”, ‘Daffodils’ gains a sturdy Electro kick while Keys’ vocals are further layered creating swelling harmonies. Elsewhere, ‘Nat King Cole’ gets twisted into a Portishead homage with an added star turn from Lil Wayne. It’s a broad collection that highlights Alicia Keys’ range while never straying too far from showcasing her familiar strengths.
