Seventeen Going Under Sam Fender

Album number two from Sam Fender finds him in self-reflective mood as he examines the multitude of experiences and relationships that contribute to character. Built on a steady, propulsive rhythm section throughout, Fender’s vocals take centre stage as he recounts his teen years, inherited toxic masculinity, and the slow creep of depression. Lyrically bleak, the mood is buoyed by building verses and snappy choruses, many of which are easy to be delivered back to Fender by festival crowds over the coming years. Yet, despite the catchy quality of much of the writing, Fender has stayed away from making straight Indie anthems as time and again he returns to more subtle melodies that draw the listener in rather than make them sing out.
