Prioritise Pleasure Self Esteem

After a decade in Indie duo Slow Club, Rebecca Taylor revitalised her sound as a solo artist working as Self Esteem. This second full-length release is a collection of big, bold and blunt Pop that uplifts and inspires while remaining deeply reflective and considerate. Laying romantic and sexual relationships bare, there’s a forceful fun throughout that taps into a lineage of female Pop stars from Kate Bush to Rihanna. The emotive ‘Still Reigning’ feels like it’s ready to explode at any moment and is all the better for simply holding pace and never fulfilling the threat. Follow up track ‘How Can I Help You’ comes out full force with driving percussion and the repeating refrain “I don’t know shit” on a rocking track much like if PJ Harvey went Pop. The best Pop album this year? Expect to find this one on many end of year lists.
