K Bay Matthew E White

The album “he has forever aspired to make”, ‘K Bay’ is named for Matthew E White’s new studio and finds him in singular form creating an album that takes in so many genres and influences that calling it “eclectic” would be a significant disservice. Almost overwhelming in the way it draws from disparate sources and styles, ‘K Bay’ is a heady juxtaposition of New Wave, Soul and Electronica that doesn’t really sound like any of the genres. ‘Genuine Hesitation’ has a motorik beat and the feel good energy of a New Wave hit, ‘Nested’ is a loose, rocking Indie Electro number, while ‘Take Your Time (and Find That Orange To Squeeze)’ is a neo-Funk odyssey that opens with orchestral swell and ends with epic Stax-era horns. It’s one of the finest songs of the year. If ‘K Bay’ has an overarching theme it’s the abundant joy that White clearly had making this album that repeatedly thrills, confounds on first listen, and demands repeat spins.
