Titled after the Buddhist concept of an open, keen and malleable state like that of a new learner, the latest album from the prolific Sufjan Stevens comes as a collaboration with Angelo De Augustine. A loose concept album, all the tracks here take films as their inspiration. Lyrically the dual writers play fast and loose with their source material relying on free association and a focused lack of focus designed to promote openness and reflection. The result is a peaceful, almost meditative, Indie Folk album built from acoustic guitar and piano that is at its best on melancholy piano looping meditations on the course of humanity like ‘(This Is) The Thing’ and the title track.
