Screen Violence Chvrches

The fourth release from Chvrches finds them channelling slasher movie metaphors in a return towards the edgier sounds of their debut. Written remotely due to lockdowns, ‘Screen Violence’ was created by the Glaswegian trio without input from outside collaborators or producers save for a guest appearance on ‘How Not To Drown’ by The Cure’s Robert Smith.

Finely layered and drawing on synthy Post-Punk for energy rather than more contemporary EDM beats, there’s a strong sense of cohesion from track to track. Leading proceedings are Lauren Mayberry’s world-weary lyrics, delivered as a counterpoint with familiar assuredness. ‘Screen Violence’ finds joy in the shadows by drawing on darkness but never turning out the light.
