Rare, Forever Leon Vynehall

Stepping away from the firm concepts that have structured recent releases, Leon Vynehall delivers an immersive collection that relies on wild imagination to ensure engagement. While ‘Dumbo’ takes a looping piercing beat and then envelopes it in churning waves of cut up textures, ‘Alichea Vella Amor’ loops an indecipherable vocal and then intertwines faded saxophone riffing.

The result is hypnotic as looping beats pass from one to next with fleeting glimpsed images flashing past before they’re even realised. The highlight, ‘Mothra’, may only be so thanks to the clear drop to silence before the beat comes back with an arms in the air vengeance. Repeat listens are rewarded on this one.
