Notes with Attachments Pino Palladino & Blake Mills

When two famed musicians, who have supported acts as diverse as Paul Simon and Perfume Genius, get together for a collaborative album of funky Jazz rhythms, you’ll either never hear of it or be really impressed. Thankfully it’s the latter here as ‘Notes with Attachments’ sketches out improvised rhythms with abundant imagination and poise.

Pulling strongly from Afro-beat and Latin rhythms, there’s little let up as rhythms and tempos and patterns slip from one to the next with ease, all built around Palladino’s bass that darts from low and slow to grooving and jubilant. That low, slow bass underpins album highlight, ‘Djurkel’, slowly picking up pace as others come in until horns squeal to close out the track.
