The Universal Want Doves

The opening track of ‘The Universal Want’ shuts down any doubt that an eleven year hiatus may have rendered Doves unworthy of attention. Instead, ‘Carousels’ picks up not just where Doves left off but winds back the years to the heady days of early albums ‘Lost Souls’ and ‘The Last Broadcast’. Featuring a sampled Tony Allen drum pattern, the track is a panoramic epic befitting the bands anthemic legacy. Doves were always a band familiar with packed festival stages and the true meaning of an anthem, but what set them apart was their ability to rely on more than a sing along chorus. That’s still true on ‘The Universal Want’ as evidenced on any number of tracks including ‘For Tomorrow’ where a sparkling breakdown, brief as it may be, leads into a storming guitar riff to close. Doves prove that they know how to make inspirational Indie as fine as any of their peers and that their time away has only revitalised their skills.
