Purple Noon Washed Out

Having established a cohesive sound over the last decade, Washed Out return with another album of moody Chillwave. Starting with opener, ‘Too Late’ we find a familiar mix of solid percussion, dreamy synths and substantial bass mixed with a deft touch to form a surprisingly lightweight palette. Drawing on the more languid end of Balearica, the tracks on ‘Purple Noon’ sweep by in a fug of warm, contemplative summer afternoons and hints of solitary Sunday mornings. It’s an intriguing mix best balanced on ‘Time To Walk Away’ with its smooth yet assured delivery. The crystalline closer ‘Haunt’, channeling Italo Disco, stands out slightly from the rest of the album but is a worthy final inclusion and album highlight.
