Wu Hen Kamaal Williams

The follow up to 2018’s ‘The Return’ pilots William’s sound further from Jazz and deeper into a fusion style that takes in Afro Beat, Garage, House and Trip Hop. Built around Williams’ own piano and keys, the sax of Quinn Mason and, on several tracks, the strings of Miguel Atwood-Ferguson ‘Wu Hen’ is a wide-ranging and rangey album that rarely rests, even on slower numbers. An album that relies on its complimentary and contrasting textures to paint the broad picture, it’s the detail that really allows it to shine like on ‘Save Me’ when the tempo picks up midway through and as a bass run leads into diminishing muted sax before piano takes over on ‘Pigalle’.
