Punisher Phoebe Bridgers

Intimate yet universal, the lyrics of Phoebe Bridgers’ sophomore release take central stage on an album of atmospheric balladry. Poignant rather than sad, the mood is downcast but bold in the need to share humour and wit even in darker times. On ‘ICU’, muted guitar chords chug as Bridgers declares “if you’re a work of art, I’m standing too close, I can see the brush strokes”. It’s honest, blunt, a little bleak, and particularly knowing. In lesser hands this could get old, but Bridgers’ sparing nature achieves a balance that ensures ‘Punisher’ is accessible and engaging.
