Produced by Blake Mills, ‘Set My Heart On Fire Immediately’ finds a spring in the step of the Perfume Genius sound. The self-reflection, brooding and studied quiet of previous albums remain, but the colouring is more of wry contentedness than deeply fought introspection. Bolstering this feeling is a move towards an impressive dynamic range that places strings, synths, bass, percussion, vocals and engulfing space in constantly shifting relief of each other. The result is an album where the delicate strings of ‘Leave’ and its quiet spoken words can lead directly into the funky Pop groove of ‘On The Floor’. At its best, on ‘Jason’ in particular, is an album that is vibrant and warm with intimacy. Check it out.
