Closer To Grey Chromatics

As cinematic and brooding as ever, Chromatics are back with a new album after seven years. While Johnny Jewel has been busy scoring films the sleek shapes of ‘Closer To Grey’ have been slowly crafted. Opening with a taut and tense cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘The Sound of Silence’ the atmospheric Electronica hints at beats on ‘Light As A Feather’ and ‘Touch Red'. Elsewhere, ‘Move A Mountain’ is like a minimal take on a Phil Spector Soul classic. Another cover, ‘On The Wall’ originally by the Jesus and Mary Chain, somehow wears the influence of the Velvet Underground and Nico even bolder than the original. That’s the impressive thing with Chromatics; each track feels like the refined product of expert distillation of influences and ideas. Don’t miss it.
