Beautiful Vinyl Hunters Ashley Henry

The debut from virtuoso pianist Ashley Henry has no suggestion of dusty piles of records as it’s free flowing Jazz keeps up with the best flying out of the burgeoning South London scene. Featuring the incredible percussionist Makaya McCraven on Jazz jam ‘Dark Honey (4thestorm)’ ‘Beautiful Vinyl Lover’ is an album more firmly rooted in Jazz than may be expected of an album containing a cover of Solange’s ‘Cranes (In The Sky)’. Despite being mainly an instrumental album, the tracks with vocals lend an extra dimension without diminishing the impact or space allowed for the instrumental players. Most clearly on ‘I Still Believe’ with Milton Suggs where the jubilant vocals are lifted by percussion, strings and piano before giving way to a delicate instrumental close.
