Album number two arrives from the leading light in classic-styled R&B. Having made his name as a featured vocalist on tracks from an all-star list including Kendrick Lamar, Solange, Kanye West, Dr Dre, Chance the Rapper and more, it’s surprising there aren’t many showpiece guest spots on ‘1123’. The opening track, however, is a collab with Anderson .Paak and establishes the smooth mood that BJ takes on himself over the next dozen tracks.
While the pacing varies, it’s those smooth vocals that carry ‘1123’. Taking turns as poignant then confident, wrapped in the moment then loose and carefree, BJ stretches his rich vocal talents into an accomplished and developed suite.
